Seollal is Korean New Year’s day and is a representative holidays in Korea. Every year, the date is different, and this year is on February 10.
On Seollal, it is a unique custom of the Korean people to hold ancestral rites for their ancestors and bow to families and relatives. Even if parents and siblings live apart due to their busy life, the family comes together on New Year‘s Day to spend enjoyable times. Lunar New Year is one of the most important public holidays in Korea, and many people gather with their families to celebrate the new year and wish for good health and happiness, which is called as deokdam. Through these traditional customs, Koreans cherish their family and culture, and welcome the start of a new year meaningfully.
Magpie is a representative animal of Seollal in Korea. There is a famous nursery rhyme in Korea about Magpie on Seollal.
While we look back on the year that has just past with both its joys and challenges, it is the New Year which we look forward to for giving and receiving happiness, good luck, and new beginnings.
